This Pileated showed up on one of our local suet feeding stations. This is one big bird. The camera was turned sideways in an effort to sneak up on Woody for a film shot.If you have any other ideas about other Beach things to film or you have filmed here yourself, contact the webmaster. for website posting information. Note: All the clicking and buzzing is the camera trying to focus.

The pileated is about 15 inches in length and is one of the largest s found in North America. (Only the possibly extinct Ivory-billed in the southeastern United States and Cuba and the Imperial of western Mexico are larger.)

Calls: Pileated (WAV file)

The pileated eats insects, fruits and nuts. A large part of its diet is made up of carpenter ants and beetle larvae. It uses its sharp bill to pull bark off a tree to expose ant colonies.

The pileated makes its nest in a tree cavity. The female lays four eggs. Both parents incubate the eggs during the day and the male incubates the eggs at night. The chicks hatch after a little more than two weeks and fledge when they are about a month old.

Dryocopus pileatus Linnaeus

Kingdom: Animals, Phylum: Chordates, Class: Birds,

Order: Piciformes ( and Allies), Family: Picidae ()

Even if it is not seen, the Pileated's presence in an area can be detected by the observation of the large rectangular excavations it creates while searching for and obtaining its prey (its favorite meal being the carpenter ant). Or it may announce its presence with its drumming (hammering with its bill on a resonant surface), used to establish a territory and attract a mate. The Pileated's drumming starts out loud and tapers to a soft tap before ending.
